Marco Polo was born in 1254 and died in 1324. He was a Venetian trader, explorer, and diplomat. During his lifetime, he traveled extensively throughout Asia and was even held captive in Genoa for 17 years.

Now you can embark on your own virtual journey with Marco Polo, thanks to a new interactive project from Google Arts and Culture. Using historical footage and 3D animation, the project brings to life Marco's travels along the Silk Road. You can explore places like Samarkand and Bukhara in Uzbekistan, Kashgar in China, and Baghdad in Iraq.

The project is an collaboration between Google Arts and Culture, the University of Texas at Austin's College of Liberal Arts, and the American Institute of Indian Studies. It was spearheaded by Professor Sanjay Subrahmanyam of UCLA.

According to Subrahmanyam, one of the goals of the project is to debunk some of the myths about Marco Polo that have circulated over the centuries. "He's been seen as this fabulously wealthy man who went around drinking cups of gold tea and all that nonsense," said Subrahmanyam. "But if you actually look at his account – which is one of the earliest accounts of Asia by a European – he's much more than that. He's observant; he has a great eye for detail. And he also has an openness to other cultures that I think is admirable."

The project includes an interactive map that highlights Marco Polo's travels as well as videos and photos from his era. There is also a section on " Venice Before Marco Polo ," which provides background on Venetian culture before Marco's time.

In 1298, Marco Polo set out on a journey from Venice to China that spanned over 24,000 miles. His travels took him through some of the most dangerous and remote areas on the planet, yet he managed to return home safely after two years. Almost 700 years later, his journey remains shrouded in mystery. What exactly did he see and experience during his travels? And why did he choose to embark on such an adventure in the first place?

Marco Polo was born into a wealthy merchant family in Venice in 1254. Commercial ties had long since established contact between Venice and the Far East, so it's possible that Marco had heard stories about China from his parents or other relatives. In any case, he was undoubtedly attracted by the prospect of an exotic adventure in a strange and distant land.

In 1271, when Marco was 17 years old, he set sail for China with his father and uncle. The trio traveled by sea all the way to Acre – now part of present-day Israel – where they boarded a caravan heading eastward into present-day Iran. From there, they crossed the great desert of central Asia before arriving in China. The journey took almost two years, but Marco was finally able to see the legendary cities of Baghdad, Samarkand, and Kublai Khan's capital of Xanadu for himself.

Marco Polo remained in China for seventeen years, during which time he witnessed many remarkable sights. He observed traders sailing down the Yangtze River with their cargoes of silk; he saw huge elephants ridden by warriors from Burma; and he even visited the Great Wall of China. On his return voyage to Venice in 1295, Marco stopped off in Persia, where he learned that his father had passed away. Undeterred, he continued on his journey and arrived back in Venice two years later – a much wiser (and possibly wealthier) man than when he had left.

Marco Polo's journey provides us with a unique glimpse into an ancient and vanished world. Thanks to him, we now know more about China during the thirteenth century than we do about any other country at that time period. Furthermore, his account of life in Xanadu is one of the earliest descriptions of this mysterious city ever written down. So despite the fact that much about Marco Polo's journey remains a mystery, we can be grateful that he decided to share his tales with us all those centuries ago.
